Thank you Surface! I get really fucked off with the stick Fornals gets on here. Good to see you calling out what an important player he is for us.

I agree JayeMPee 11:56 Fri Aug 19 Mostly very tedious football, no confidence to take the ball forward.

Areola - punches well, worries me when he races forward to meet a forward. I see pens against us galore.
Johnson, Ashby, Coventry - all terribly disappointing. None of them made any positive contribution at all. Hopefully they just froze on the night and will come good. Johnson half at fault for the goal - some advice: thanks for helping out at CB Ben, now concentrate on displacing one of the full-backs from the team
Coufal - industrious but unimpressive - gets a pass for playing on wrong side.of defence
Oggy - just being back is a huge positive. Looks slow and old at the moment, but surely that will improve with games.
Lanzini - terrible performance. Uninterested and clueless. Sell. A huge contrast to:
Fornals, who transformed the team's performance when he came on. Such a good player, one of those you notice more in his absence. Industrious, creative, enthusiastic and a real leader.
Cornet - good crosses and flashes of skill. Worryingly powder puff in the tackle. Needs to revise the offside law.
Soucek - Moyes seems to have sacrificed him on the altar of the blessed Dec. He was a talented box to box midfielder who was great getting forward and scoring goals. Now he's just Rice's minder, despite actually being better at the whole scoring goals thing. Looked a bit of a threat going forward in Rice's absence, but mostly shit.
Bowen - couldn't get in the game in the first half, which was not necessarily his fault given the service he got. Transformed back to his best when Fornals came on. Great goal. Hated coming off but took it like a good team man.
Scamacca -took his goal well and worked hard enough. I'm a bit worried by the way the ball bounces off him like a pinball bumper when he's used as a target. We shall see.
Antonio - looking his age, thank God we have some sort of cover for him now.
Benrahma - he looked like the bloke who knows that it's him or someone else (Lanzini) who is likely to get the boot and was determined to show it should be him who stays. This is how he should play all the time. Quite honestly, what was not to like? Great assist.
Kehrer - I am not happy about that goal. A fucking shambles which he was (at least) 50% responsible for. Benefit of the doubt for only having met Johnson that day. Can play a decent ball, for sure.

Agree to an extent. It really is that midfield that is in need of improvement and we have seen it in all 3 games this season. Less so against Forest but still Soucek, Lanzini in particular are not up to tge standards we now need.
The Danes lacked a cutting edge and limited forward options and their defence was suspect when pressured but we never had the ball enough and could not build from the back and link defence to attack for 80-90% of the game. The Danes totally bossed the middle of the park and showed how you build from the back thru midfield with slick, crisp passing and good movement.
Upgrade to midfield and full back areas urgently needed or we will struggle to lay a glove on Brighton and especially Spuds

Fornals improved the midfield in the 2nd half, much better going forward. Sadly Coventry was poor, needs to get confidence to pass forward or he can forget getting into the team. Lanzini should have done much better, he was obviously there to get the ball forward and he didn't do that. Soucek also poor. It was good to see Scamacca, Bowen and Antonio get goals, but it was Cornet and Benrahma (again) that impressed me. But a slight complaint about Cornet is he needs to pay more attention to timing his runs to avoid getting offside. Ashby was very promising, both defending and going forward. Ogbonna also made a good step towards being back, looked good and not afraid to get stuck in. Areola, Coufal and Johnson, OK

A real positive last night was the return of Ogbonna to the senior team. If we can get him match fit and keep him there then he is a massive asset. Solid, dependable and totally a hammer that will give everythig. I cant see they score that goal with him on the pitch. With Zoumas dodgy knees and Dawsons injury persisting he could still be key player even at his age. Big presence for us.

I think I watched a different game to most on here. Of course we got a result and all three goals were quality but the football was agonising. Tip tap, mainly backwards and little energy with only spasmodic pressure on the opposition. The only excitement (apart from the goals) came from Benrahma (again) who really led the defenders a dance. This is the guy Moyes was hoping to sell a couple of weeks ago.
True we were missing Rice but I didn't see much to bother either Brighton or the spuds in the next home games. Early days and hope I am wrong but this does not look like a team aiming for a top four finish.

enjoyed that last night- lovely warm evening and no cunts around me...we did just about enough-- as everyone says, centre mid is a huge problem - really need someone creative with a bit of pace..

Reading the thread it seems like it was a poor game with flashes of good play. Centre mid is a problem. Soucek looks out of sorts and if Rice is out the other options are not convincing. Coventry isnt the answer thats for sure. I dont even think Rice is at his best currently.

I take it all those knocking Coventry for not taking on markers or finding a killer pass have seen him play week-in, week-out and he’s disappointed every time, right?

How did Ashby play?

"we really need a ball carrier though, someone who can drop a shoulder and go past someone and accelerate."
Spot on, Coventry Soucek and Lanzini that first half offered no attacking threat, no shots, no penetration through the middle at all.
A midfielder that can be comfortable and a threat around the box or a goalscoring no 10 is what we need.
Or move Fornals into that no 8 type role and bring in another winger/forward

Better to have a slow Belgian who can pass and finish than a slow Chech who can't.

Yep, Lingard can do that as well. As said, Moyes has missed his main targets and here we are as a result of that.

Manuel - Apparently the Belgian is a great finisher and good passer.
But slow as fuck, we really need a ball carrier though, someone who can drop a shoulder and go past someone and accelerate.. People moan about Rice wanting to be Gerrard, but if he doesn't do it who does?
Too many backwards and sideways passes, definitely needs an injection of pace in the middle..
Onana's cameo for Everton shows exactly why we wanted him, the only mystery is why he wasn't ready to start if the rumours are to be believed, cause Soucek just doesn't seem right. Not just his ability on the ball but his pressing as well.

I've seen Ashby play a number of times and have always been really impressed. However, it seemed like last night he was under orders to not pass it forward on any account. Also, when I've seen him before, he likes to bomb forward down that right wing but again hardly did that. To me it looked as if he was told not to, which would be a real shame if that flair that he has is being coached out of him.
However, a good win. Great to see the Scammel, Bowen and Mickey get off the mark. Mind you, after that pass for Micky from Benny, I could have put that away!

fraser - It's all but over for Soucek, you can only live of 'past glories' for so long. He still has a decent rep in Europe (bit like Vlasic) so I'd not be surprised to see him go, we seriously need better than what he can serve up, the old excuse about him not playing further forward or being tired are over, that's if you bought them in the first place. Hopefully we'll get this Belgium in who apparently can pass the ball to a teammate?
